Q: I have a 1949 wheat penny that has been die cut wrong. It obviously went through the machine wrong or something. Some of the wording is cut off also. It is a treasury error. I have attached a scan of the back of the coin so you can see how it has been cut. What would it be worth? In addition, I have 2 mercury dimes; one from 1923 and one from 1927. Both are in good shape. Q: have a Presidents commemorative coin that is almost smooth. It has Zachery Taylor on the front with 12th. President of the U.S.A.. The dates are 1849 and 1850. The back can only be read slightly as follows: rough and ready, a soldier in war of 1812, ----- Black Hawk,------- N D L , Mexican war, 40 years military service. That is all that can be seen because it's worn. It looks to be brass, I'm not sure. Thanks; Jean <jeannalley@yahoo.com>

Q: Hello- I have a few questions on some pennies that I have. First off is a 1984. It looks almost new (still shiny) but has a strange look and texture to it. It seems to have small bumps or ridges all over it. The lettering is very distinct on both sides, but Lincoln on the obverse and the memorial on the reverse don't seem to have the normal amount of detail to them. The rim(??) seems to be stronger in the area around the date, and is almost non-existant above "In God". Second is a 1985 penny. There seems to be an extra ridge on the left upper side of the obverse. The "IN' is missing - all you can see is a faint mark of the far right side of the "IN". On "LIBERTY" it looks more like "IIBERTY" as the extra "rim" runs through where the bottom of the L should be.Any help you may be able to give would be greatly appreciated!! "Shanty & Babette" <tits69@nts-online.net>

Q: Is the date engraving a separate process from the "master" engraving of the obverse surface. For instance, the "master" is used year after year and then date is added as another step in the process? I really am new to this. I started out looking for that "diamond is the rough" but since beginning this venture of sorting through this mountain of coins, I have come to adjust my way of thinking. At this point I don't really care how much stuff is "worth" I find coinage very fascinating, I am just trying to gather as much information so I can make educated choices on how to create a "very cool" collection from what I already have in my jars. I have read a lot but
I think I need to talk to people with more experience now, to find the right answers. <jsuttie@kns.com>

Thanks for your site.
From: Nick & Kim Wade
My husband and I have several jars full of misc. change and were considering turning them all in for cash. I have been slowing filtering thru as I would hate to put something back into circulation that may be worth more than it's stated value. Your site was very helpful.
